Kinnaur is one of the popular districts in Himachal Pradesh. It is also known as land of Gods. Kinnaur Kailash Mountain lies in this district, which is locally known as Kinner Kailash. Kinner Kailash Shivling is a vertical rock pointing upwards sky, having height of 79 feet. Tourists love to trek Kinner Kailash Mountain to view the mesmerizing beauty of this spot. When the sun rises, the colour of this rock seems whitish. As sun goes up, its colour varies to reddish in the mid day, pale gray in the evening and turns dark grey at the sunset. It is also said that a person can make hardly single chance to visit this peak in his life.

Mythology of Kinner Kailash

Kinnaur Mountains have various mythological beliefs and facts. The native word for Kinnaur is “Kinner”, which literally means half God and half man. At the time of Mahabharata, when Pandavas went for exile, they have spent some time in these mountains. The story of the dangerous demon (Asur) Bhasmasur is also famous here. Bhasmasur went into the rigorous devotion of the Lord Shiva and got boon of turning any person into ashes on touching the head. He tried to test this first on the Lord Shiva. At this, Lord Shiva ran from there and stayed hiding himself in the mountain caves. Kinner Kailash is also the place where he resided for some time. The demon was finally killed by the bluff of the Lord Vishnu, who appeared in disguise of charming lady.

Trek and Places

“Kinnaur Kailash Parikrama” is the most known trek here. This starts from the village Tang Ling and ends at the village Sangla. The trek takes minimum two to three days to complete with climb to the Shivlingam rock. Kinner Kailash Mountain is at the height of approx 6000 metres. This high trek tour is moderately difficult to complete. Local people trek here with the famous hooting of the Lord Shiva – “Har Har Mahadev”.  The best time to visit here is between the month of May and September. There are more places to visit in Kinnaur like Reckong Peo, Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa, Ribba, Lipa, Nako and Moorang.
